Macular Degeneration and Its Impact on Your Vision

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) refers to a group of eye diseases that damage the macula, the central part of the retina, leading to vision loss in the center of your visual field. There are two main types: dry macular degeneration, characterized by the presence of drusen (yellow deposits under the retina), and wet macular degeneration, where abnormal blood vessels leak fluid into the macula, causing rapid vision changes. Both types can progress through stages, from early to advanced, impacting daily activities and overall quality of life.

Recognizing The Risk Factors

Certain factors can increase the risk of developing macular degeneration. These include:

  • Age (especially after 50)
  • Family history of macular degeneration
  • Smoking
  • Race (Caucasian)
  • Overweight or obese
  • High blood pressure
  • Conditions like heart disease
  • Poor diet
  • Prolonged exposure to UV light
  • Gender (women)
