Decoding Diabetes: How It Impacts
Your Vision

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body processes glucose (blood sugar). There are two main types: type 1, where the body doesn’t produce insulin, and type 2, where the body doesn’t use insulin properly. The high levels of blood sugar associated with diabetes can lead to several eye conditions, often collectively referred to as diabetic eye disease.

Diabetic Eye Complications

The following eye issues are related to high blood sugar levels and diabetes:

This condition damages the blood vessels in the retina — the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It's the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in adults.

DME occurs when fluid leaks into the macula, the part of the retina responsible for detailed central vision. It can cause blurriness and, if untreated, lead to vision loss.

Diabetes increases the risk of developing cataracts, clouding the eye's lens. People with diabetes tend to develop cataracts earlier.

Diabetes doubles the risk of glaucoma, an eye disease that damages the optic nerve.
